ROTH-READY…FOR 2010 AND BEYOND!

NATALIE CHOATE

(NOTE:  2 HOUR PROGRAM)

Sponsored by Communities Foundation of Texas

The purpose of this seminar is to familiarize tax and investment professionals with the characteristics, requirements, and planning implications of the Roth IRA and “Designated Roth Retirement Account” (or “Roth 401(k)”) in general, and the pros, cons, and pitfalls of Roth “conversions” in particular.  Any professional who advises (1) clients who hold assets in IRAs, 401(k) plans or other retirement plans (2) regarding estate planning, retirement planning or investment issues. The course will add valuable knowledge for estate planning attorneys, accountants and financial planners; professionals in the planned giving, investment, and life insurance fields; plan administrators and IRA providers; and bank trust officers and other professional trustees. IMPORTANCE OF SEMINAR: By providing tax-free distributions, plus no required distributions during the participant’s life, Roth IRAs offer significant planning opportunities to individuals willing to pay more tax now in exchange for lower taxes later. Elimination of the “income cap” test for Roth IRA conversions has made Roth retirement plans available to a much broader class of individuals than ever before. The professional advisor’s lack of awareness of the rules governing Roth IRAs can cause financial losses to a client and his or her beneficiaries. Natalie Choate is an attorney with the Boston law firm of Nutter, McClennen & Fish. Her practice is limited to estate planning for retirement benefits.  Her two books, Life and Death Planning for Retirement Benefits and The QPRT Manual, are leading resources for estate planning professionals. Named “Estate Planner of the Year” by the Boston Estate Planning Council, Natalie is listed in The Best Lawyers in America. The National Association of Estate Planners and Councils has awarded Natalie the “Distinguished Accredited Estate Planner” designation.  Her articles on estate planning topics have been published in ACTEC Notes, Estate Planning, Trusts and Estates, Tax Practitioners Journal and Tax Management.
